Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is a broad term for physical yoga practice and, in many modern classes, describes a steady session in which postures are explored with time to notice alignment, breathing and how the body responds. Classes vary by teacher, but the pace is usually more measured than a flowing Vinyasa class.

Choosing a class

Who Hatha Yoga may suit

Hatha may suit people who prefer clear instruction, time within each posture and a balanced class rather than continuous movement. It can be a useful starting point for beginners, while experienced students may value the detail and space to refine familiar poses.

Your first session

What a class is like

A typical class may combine a short settling practice, individual postures, simple sequences, breathing exercises and a final relaxation. You will usually move at a considered pace, with pauses between some poses. The exact emphasis depends on the teacher, so check the class description if you need a particularly gentle or challenging session.

What to bring

Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. A teacher may also use blocks, a strap or a blanket; many venues provide these, but confirm before your first visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hatha yoga suitable for beginners?

Many Hatha classes welcome beginners because the measured pace allows time for explanation. Always check the individual class level and tell the teacher about injuries, health conditions or pregnancy before taking part.

Is Hatha yoga gentle?

It can be, but Hatha is a broad label rather than a fixed level of intensity. Some classes are restorative and others include strong standing poses or longer holds.

What is the difference between Hatha and Vinyasa yoga?

Hatha classes often explore poses individually or in shorter sequences. Vinyasa generally links movement and breath in a more continuous flow.
